Steubenville calls itself the "City of Murals," and offers an enticing free map for a "Footsteps of Dean Martin Tour," but all we have time for on this trip is a stop at an eyecatching golden man in a hood. It was created by artist Dimitri Akis.
We saw a statue similar to this in nearby Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1985, although the attribution on this one says that it was forged by Ohio Valley Steelworkers in 1989. The life-size figure carries a long-handled dipping ladle, and is wearing the hooded asbestos suit that probably killed him. This depiction of a worker as a faceless robot, spray-painted gold, is one that union officials might want to reconsider.
