Strange Head of Andrew Jackson
Gainesboro, Tennessee
Small but memorable, a bronze head of President Andrew Jackson is bolted to a concrete pedestal outside the town hall of Gainesboro (Jackson's home was in relatively nearby Nashville). Although the President's head is well-formed, his downcast expression is surprisingly gloomy, and his collar is as unnaturally high and narrow as a stove pipe. Strangest of all, the entire upper half of Jackson's body is simply gone, leaving only a pair of gold braid epaulets hanging in the air from his collar bone, like vestigial wings.
Unveiled in 2001, the head is the work of local sculptor Sam T. Barnes, who dedicated it to his grandmother.
