World's Fair "Peace Through Understanding" Arch
West Hempstead, New York
Eleven parabolic arches, each 60 feet tall, were scattered across the 646 acres of the 1964-65 New York World's Fair. They were easy to spot from a distance, and the Fair promoted them as rendezvous spots for visitors: "Meet Your Friends at Arch 3," etc. (Each arch had a number). The words "Peace Through Understanding" (one of the slogans of the Fair) were suspended within each arch near its apex. When the Fair closed, the arches vanished -- except for this one. The "Peace Through Understanding" lettering survived for a short time, but it's long gone now.
The arch currently stands in a parking lot, supporting a billboard for the various stores in the Cherry Valley Shopping Center.
August 2014: Tipster James Courier let us know that another of the arches is at the closed Rocky Point Amusement Park in Warwick, RI and will be part of a new state park, currently under construction.
