John Glenn and Three Other Guys
Zanesville, Ohio
Founder - Patriot - Writer - Astronaut. The bronze sculpture in Zane's Landing Park presents four important men from eastern Ohio, each born roughly 50 years later than the next. Astronaut (and US Senator) John Glenn is depicted wearing his Mercury mission Right Stuff spacesuit, reaching skyward with his left hand. He was the first American to orbit Earth, though the statue shows him aged as he was when he returned to space on a mission at age 77.
The other three figures are novelist Zane Grey, shown seated and scribbling out another western; Noah Norris, a patriot who enlisted in Ohio's first black regiment in the Civil War; and town founder, John McIntire -- son-in-law of Ebenezer Zane.
