Florida Caverns
Marianna, Florida
A natural cave, in Florida, with stalagmites, stalactites, columns, draperies and ribbons, is all lit with colored LEDs. There are also fossilized shark teeth, coral, shells, and fish vertebrae, as well as bats, mice, cave crickets, salamanders, cave spiders, and an occasional snake or frog. The guided tour leads through a dozen rooms, and up and down steps, with occasionally slippery floors.
One unusual feature of the cave are the chisel marks made by 1930s Civilian Conservation Corps workers, who enlarged the passageways by hand so that visitors could stand upright during the guided tours. Despite their efforts, some parts of the tour only have a ceiling height of 4.5 feet.
Visitors can also simply watch a video of the cave tour from the Visitors Center, which was also built by the CCC.
