Obie: Goofy Bronze Tiger

Field review by the editors.

Massillon, Ohio

Obie is not a real animal, but an eight-foot-tall bronze statue of a plush outfit mascot: the tiger of the Massillon high school football team. Obie has a happy face, carries a pigskin, wears an M letter jersey and an old-fashioned leather helmet, and appears to be stomping his way toward a touchdown and victory. He's so cute that you'd probably try to hug him while he ran you over.

Sculpted by Zanesville artist Alan Cottrill, Obie was unveiled in August 2022. Everyone in attendance received a free scoop of Tiger Stripe ice cream.

Obie is nicely positioned in front of Eric Grohe's trompe l'oeil mural melding ancient Greek sports with a slightly more modern gridiron in "Football, A Century of Heroes."
