Zillah, Washington: Teapot Dome Gas Station

Why build a gas station in the shape of a teapot? If you had been alive in 1922, you'd get the joke.

Teapot Dome Gas Station is still in pretty good shape.

This is still worth visiting, off by itself, and someone is paying to keep the lights on. The Teapot may yet rise again!

Well, it took a few years to stop and see the Tea Pot Gas Station (We were on our way back from Vegas via Salt Lake.). It was closed, but it was in pretty good shape. The pumps read $1.79. No signs of vandalism -- that was nice.

Phil Pasquini let us know: "The city of Zillah recently purchased the Teapot Dome Gas station and is working with the Friends of the Teapot to raise funds to move the famous structure into town where it can be protected from vandalism. Donations can be sent to Keybank, 100 7th St., Zillah, Washington 98953 - (509) 829-5200. Checks should be made out in care of the Friends of the Teapot Association."

In a recent article in the Yakima paper, they discussed the need for financial help to move this landmark. It will cost about $250,000 to move and fit out as an information booth. The State of Washington has designated this building as one of the "state's most endangered historic properties," While I don't know how to contact them, a group calling themselves "Friends of the Teapot" has been formed to work on raising the money for this necessary move.

We stopped by the Teapot Dome gas station and were sad to see that it's boarded up. I sure hope they can find a way to save and make good use of this place. Gosh, it seems like the perfect building for a coffee stand. Heck, we've got one on just about every corner up here in the PNW anyway. Sad.
