Alliance, Nebraska: Carhenge

The Druids got nowhere near the prairie of the Nebraska panhandle, but they might've felt at home here, at a Stonehenge replica made of junked cars.

Carhenge

You can leave your mark on some of the cars (they ask that you don't graffiti the main attraction). Bring your own pen!

I went to Carhenge in the summer. If you go then, make sure to bring water and sunscreen. The replica is very accurate to Stonehenge.

I suggest bringing the whole family. They'll love it!

Yes, we too have been blinded and dessicated in the awesome radiance that is Carhenge.

The mecca of American oddity still stands isolated in western Nebraska. On a recent road trip, I made my friend detour two hours through western Nebraska to witness the art/oddity/wonder of Carhenge. And I will say that the installation did not disappoint.

The site is now overgrown with weeds and sunflowers, but the gray paint on the cars has held up to continue the intended mimicry of Stonehenge. Whether you think the gray cars aligned to impersonate Stonehenge are art or just odd, it is a site to be seen and one of the best known, but least visited road oddities in America. The gift shop was kind of a waste and it would have been nice to have more postcards and amusing t-shirts, but I was more than happy to have time wandering around the car art.

The state of Nebraska has made some alterations in their highway system! Carhenge is no longer located on Hwy. 385. It's now on Hwy. 87, 2 1/2 miles north of Alliance. If you can find a local "Nebraska Panhandle" tourist map, the roads are correct; the 2000 State of Nebraska highway map is incorrect. Also when in the area, do be sure to check out the "rest stop" located 1/2 to 1 mile further north from Carhenge.
