Sadly, this muffler man is no more. I travel this route several times a year, and remember him when he had a head. I think he had been there since the late '60s.
[Tom Andersen, 02/05/2007]Headless Muffler Man
This headless muffler man is at a convenience store ("Poor Richards"). We stopped to take a picture of his still-standing, yet decapitated body and I wondered - what happened to the head? My question was answered when I saw the head laying on the ground behind a fence near the body. And still smiling, I might add.
[Julie Peasley, 01/22/2004]Decapitated Muffler Man
I snapped shortly after sighting on Hwy 111 in CA, near Palm Springs.
[Chris Testa, 02/24/2001]I was driving along Interstate 111 on New Year's Eve when lo and behold a chance encounter with a decapitated Muffler Man off the road near a local market! Further study reveals my sighting to be the unfortunate fate of a previously sighted muffler man. Thought you would all appreciate (or sadly, grieve) the update.
[Chris Testa, 01/07/2001]Cowboy Muffler Man - with a beard
The December 27th, 1998 LA Times shows a Muffler Man decked out in cowboy gear in Mecca, CA on Hwy 111. The picture shows him from the back but it is definitely one of them. [Brett, 1/4/99]
I'm not sure if this is the one listed as "Mecca", 'cause it's near there, just north of the town of Niland at the northeast corner of Salton Sea, CA. I hope this is a new one...I need the fame and glory that goes with a new sighting.
