A horrible curse is said to befall anyone who removes a piece of petrified wood from inside the Park. Lucky for you, there are gift shops just outside the Park, willing to sell you a chunk, a stump, or a whole log.

Petrified Forest National Park

They say there is more petrified wood outside the park than in it -- this certainly is true. We stopped to take a photo of the scenery outside the park and kicked a piece out of the ditch. Rangers confirmed that it was real petrified wood. DO NOT TAKE ROCKS FROM THE PARK.

Aside from a hefty fine, there also is a curse; you apparently are subject to all kinds of bad luck if you take a piece from the park. The park is something to see. If you are a dinosaur fan, stop in the visitors center to look at the fossils.

Petrified Forest Curse Still Going Strong

Rangers at Arizona's Petrified Forest report that they continue to receive letters and packages returning bits of petrified wood stolen from the site, apologizing and offering a litany of bad luck they've had since stealing it. Recent curse manifestations include "I lost my job..." and "Our house burned down..."

Drive east from Holbrook about 18 miles on US Hwy 180, then turn north onto Petrified Forest Rd. You can also get to the Park and Visitor Center directly from I-40 exit 311, but the good gift shops are at the southern, US Hwy 180 entry.
