The statue, by local artist Peter Goetzinger, probably captures the improvised hatchet-hacking haircuts of most early frontiersmen traveling without their hairdressers. David Thompson mapped much of the Pacific-Northwest over 200 years ago; tourists can join him peering along his sextant toward Lake Pend Orielle, which he also mapped.
