I drove by this tree October 18, 2005 and saw two vehicles -- looked like hunters or campers -- tossing shoes into the tree. I just went on by, then decided to turn around and go back. The shoe throwers were gone, but I took photos of the tree. It may have been teenagers that started it, but it looks like many others are continuing the tradition as they drive by the tree! One part is broken down from the weight of the shoes.
[Linda Novakovich, 10/30/2005]I lived in Juntura for 5 years. While shoe donations come from locals, most come from visitors passing through. We're very proud of our shoe tree. No one knows how it began, but some years it blossoms with many shoes; other years, not so good. Our state guys even pick up and replace ones knocked out by the wind!

About sixteen miles east of Juntura, Oregon, between mile markers 206 and 207 on Highway 20, there is a small dirt turnout above Gold Creek. In this turnout is a tree festooned with shoes. Considering that Juntura is the nearest town for a long distance with very little to do, it would be reasonable to assume local teenagers are responsible for the tree.

December 2004 - Debbee Gossell sent photos of the tree. "This is really a desolute place on a boring drive. I was driving from Eugene, OR to Boise, ID. This was truly the most interesting thing about my round trip."
