Winesburg - Berlin, Ohio - World's Largest Wheel of Real Cheese - Cut Up

We went in search of the World's largest Wheel of Real Cheese. Got to Berlin late at night, so had to wait till the next morning to go see the Cheese. Got there, no signs for "This way to Giant Cheese," so we bought some coffee and asked the girl behind the counter what was up. Well, they cut up that wheel of cheese; she wasn't sure when, but said that a lot of people had come looking for it. [Emily & Brian, 07/14/2008]

[RA: Cheese Pilgrimage Travel Advisory: Whether it was cut up or went bad, this giant wheel of cheese in Berlin has been MIA for a decade...]

World's Largest Wheel of Cheese. Winesburg - Berlin, Ohio - World's Largest Wheel of Cheese

The giant cheese in is no more! Apparently last year the refrigeration unit broke down and the cheese spoiled. What a bummer! I've seen the world's largest REPLICA cheese in Wisconsin, but I was really looking forward to seeing the largest REAL cheese. I now feel as if my life is somehow unfulfilled.... [Louisa, 05/30/1998]

[RA: We heard that excuse a few years back. Perhaps the folks in Berlin tell everyone who asks that the refrigeration unit broke down "last year"... Anyway, we visited before things all went to Hell, and here's the snapshot to prove it. Protected in its cramped cryogenic sleep chamber, that Cheese was nearly impossible to photograph. The sign said "Largest Wheel of Cheese Known," a claim with nuances that probably allowed them to remain in denial for thirty years.

In fall of 1995, a Quebec, Canada cheesemaker produced a behemoth 57,518-pound cheddar cheese. For several years before that, the largest was reportedly the Belle of Wisconsin, a 40,060-pound cheddar, at Simon's Specialty Cheese in Little Chute, WI.]
