Correction to the note about the Blue Hole in Castalia Ohio. The state of Ohio does not own, thereby making it impossible for the state to reopen the once popular roadside attaction.
The state DID purchase the Castalia Farms Trout farm to use it as a state fish hatchery. This hatchery is adjacent to a private trout club, which DOES own the Blue Hole. The very exclusive club (50 members) has no plans to re-open the attraction.
I have worked in Castalia for 16 years and am pleased to have worked with the husband and wife team who now manage the club for the membership!
[Jackie Yambert, 01/28/2000]The "Blue Hole" in Castalia, Ohio, is a giant blue spring that is very deep and contains no oxygen, so there's no life in it. The place was closed for several years, but has recently been purchased by The Ohio Division of Wildlife. There was a trout farm as part of the original attraction, and that's what the state bought the place for. There are plans to reopen sections of it as a state park, including, of course, The Blue Hole. The trout farm will supply Ohio rivers and lakes with new fish.
[J and L Ray, 06/15/1998]The Castalia Blue Hole -- I haven't been there for probably 25 years, but it sure was a cheesy ripoff in its day. Located near Sandusky, Ohio, to catch the Cedar Point crowd, it's a small pond that is allegedly bottomless. A horse and wagon were reported to have fallen in and disappeared in the 1800s. Duh -- it's probably less than half a mile from the shore of Lake Erie. Does the phrase "underground aquifer" come to mind? If you're too disappointed by the Blue Hole, they have a small exhibit of honey beehives as well.
