  • 3 churches. Elkin - Thurmond, North Carolina - Trading Up Churches

We found this mildly interesting -- a row of three churches, all the same denomination (Baptist), in western North Carolina. The congregation continued to grow over a period where a larger church was needed, and the old one kept operating until the new one was completed. The older churches weren't demolished, and are used for auxiliary activities.

Not sure how common this is, but we'll be on the lookout for a 4- or 5- church evolution.... [RoadsideAmerica.com Team, 07/25/2008]

  • Whirligigs. Lucama, North Carolina - Vollis Simpson's Whirligigs

I visited Vollis Simpson's Whirligigs last week. Like the other recent visitor mentioned, things are overgrown on the outside, but I kind of liked the feel of an overgrown ruin. Keep Out signs and barbed wire ringed the place, but I saw an old man nearby who I assume was Vollis Simpson. I asked him if I could walk around and take pictures. His response was "The gate is open." I took this to mean that if the gate is open you are free to walk around, which I did. It is a truly amazing place - especially from the inside. [Matt, 07/25/2008]

[RA: Agreed -- we don't mind the overgrowth, as long as Vollis is still building whirligigs nearby. If he doesn't have time to walk over to the gate with you, he usually gives a nod for respectful visitors to self-tour.]

  • Shoe Tree. Hawthorne, Nevada - Shoe Tree

This is a few miles north of Hawthorne, Nevada near Walker lake. It is a dead tree with hundreds of shoes hanging from it. No signs, we didn't stop and ask but we did stop to take pictures.

It has no sign it just appears on the side of the road and you will want to turn around to make sure you saw what you thought you saw.

There is an asphalt parking area around the tree. [B. Lillis, 07/25/2008]

  • Hamburg, New Jersey - Gingerbread Castle

According to a news article in the paper for that area, the castle was first on EBay for $649,000 and did not sell. What a summer house that could have been! A local developer bought it about a year and a half ago and promised to restore it.

As a child I had gone several times with family, plus on a class trip in the first grade. Small children are not raised on those nursery rhyme characters any longer as prior generations were, so they don't connect as we did. I think with any sort of restoration promise fulfilled, small kids today would still find it exciting, not to mention the parents. [Bill Woodier, 07/24/2008]
