[Michelle, 06/19/2010] - Flagstaff, Arizona - Two Lumberjacks
There are two lumberjack muffler men -- one inside and one outside the Walkup Skydome stadium at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff. (NAU's sports teams are nicknamed, curiously enough, the Lumberjacks). I have heard that both lumberjacks previously stood in front of The Lumberjack Cafe, which is now Granny's Closet, on Route 66 in Flagstaff.
[Martin Ince, 10/13/1997] One of two mighty lumberjacks at NSU, this Bunyan may be the world's first Muffler Man. He stands on the grounds outside the Skydome arena, and was briefly seen in the 1960s film "Easy Rider."

I stopped by Don Parks' home and was lucky enough to pull up just as Don was coming out the front gate. We talked for a minute, and when I answered "Yes" to the question, "So, did you hear about my place on Roadside America?," Don offered me a tour of the grounds.
The most important thing to report is that Don's collection has spilled over onto the lot directly across the street from him. When that property came up for sale, Don bought it, and now that house and yard are also filled with statues, toys, machinery, cars from amusement park rides, you name it. I've never seen so much stuff in one place in my life. It was actually a little overwhelming.
Most notable for me (besides the Muffler Man, of course) were several statues that I honestly couldn't recall ever seeing before, and not one but two examples of the Hobo Joe's statues (like the giant one in Buckeye, AZ). Don's a nice guy, great to talk to, and really knowledgeable about other attractions in AZ. So glad I ran into him.

Tipster Norm Richie comments: "We never called it a Muffler Man, but the one pictured for Tucson is a dead ringer for the one that sat in front of the Lumberjack Cafe in Flagstaff, AZ for years in the '60s." And "Crissy" writes: "My friends in Flagstaff explained to me that the college kids steal the axe from one of the muffler men every year as a prank of some sort."
