- Albuquerque, New Mexico - National Atomic Museum
When visiting the Atomic Museum, don't miss the 60's vintage Civil Defense manuals for sale in the gift shop. Your house and neighbors may be incinerated, but, thanks to your basement sandbag bunker, you'll emerge after Armageddon to rebuild. They're also offering attractive atomic bomb blueprints -- think of the possibilities!

Atomic Bomb earrings target Japanese emotions
The city of Hiroshima in Japan has protested against the sale of Atomic Bomb earrings as souvenirs at Albuquerque's Atomic National Museum. While late last week, the museum was standing firm, latest word is that they've caved and the atomic gift shop's most popular keepsake has been withdrawn. The museum's tactical blunder was revealing the existence of "Little Boy" and "Fat Man" replica earrings on its website. Antinuclear activists in Japan stumbled onto the souvenir and complained...
[08/09/1999]In keeping with Albuquerque's increased focus on water conservation, the small park where the Madonna of the Trail statue stands is currently being "xeriscaped." All of the grass has been dug out and the grounds are being landscaped with drought-tolerant xeric plants. The statue faces west, and is difficult to photograph in the morning when looking into the rising sun.

- Albuquerque, New Mexico - Muffler Man
The lumberjack mutant Muffler Man of Albuquerque finally has his arms and ax back. They were blown off in a late 2013 windstorm, but saved by his current owners, the May Cafe, which finally amassed enough money to have its bearded mascot restored and repainted in June 2019. The lumberjack is a mutant, one-of-a-kind copy of a real Muffler Man, dating to 1974. He originally stood over the Shofner Lumber Company, but when the May Cafe, a Vietnamese restaurant, bought the property in 1992, they wisely kept the lumberjack. He had to be repaired standing in place atop his 20-foot-high pole, which added to the cost, as there were fears that were he taken down, modern Albuquerque sign codes would not allow him to be put back up.
