- San Francisco, California - Wave Organ
A 3-year renovation of the San Francisco Wave Organ will complete in February 2010. The renovation means that silt and other debris has been cleared from the tubes so you can surely disregard all of the rumors that the sound is muted. A public celebration is scheduled for Saturday, February 13, 2010 from noon to 4pm. Organ creator, Peter Richards, will be there to talk about the project. Stay tuned to public radio as I will have a piece airing which includes an interview with Peter and sounds from the freshly cleaned organ.
[Noah Chandler, 01/19/2010] It's on a little tiny peninsula (peninsuletta?!) just east of the Golden Gate Yacht Club on Bay Street in the Marina District -- a water organ built out of pieces from an old graveyard. Go at high tide and listen to the various rumblings through the pipes. The Wave Organ is free and approachable on foot 24 hours a day. Also, it's near the Exploratorium, an awesome interactive science museum.
[Erin Merritt, 02/25/1998]Franklin Auto Body, on the corner of Franklin and Page Streets, appears to have a car coming out of the side of the building. The headlights are illuminated at night; the license plate is the shop's phone number. It was placed on the building by the shop's owner when they had to total the car after a wreck.

Update, June 2002 - Tipster Cheryl Roberts sent a few photos and reported: "The customer relations fella at the St. Francis Yacht Club said that he understood that the ruins that form the Wave Organ were from some type of carnival attraction, not of a graveyard. But he didn't sound too sure of himself. He said that all of the pipes in the organ are now clogged and never make any noise. It truly is a shame... But it's definitely still cool to view."
