Climb 95 steps to see a rock shelter that was a campsite for people 19,000 years ago, according to some (others disagree). It now sports a roof and an observation deck, which the the Paleo-Indians did not.

- Meadowcroft Rockshelter. From Hwy 50 in Avella, continue north on Avella Rd, paralleling the train tracks. Turn left when the street ends onto Browntown Rd/Route 4018. Drive for 2.5 miles, following the signs for Meadowcroft Rd, until you come to the Meadowcroft Rockshelter and Museum of Rural Life.

It's an interesting stop. Guides do not know as much about the site as they should. I was disappointed that the artifacts had been removed.
[E, 09/02/2019] These visually beautiful, conceptually unnerving rock carvings are set within lush oak and pine woods. It's a wonderful place to enjoy a walk in nature, surrounded by strange religious art.

Currently they have a picnic shelter (costs to rent for large parties) and a Portapotty. There are benches throughout the path. They have one picnic table along the path. Nice easy walk, though not wheelchair accessible.
