VP Hannibal Hamlin's Death Couch
Bangor, Maine
A huge fire destroyed most of downtown Bangor in 1911, but somehow this priceless artifact was spared and is displayed in the Bangor Public Library. Hannibal Hamlin, Lincoln's first Vice President, died on it on July 4th, 1891, after collapsing while playing cards.
Coincidentally, Hamlin was also playing cards when he'd learned, out of the blue, that he'd been chosen as Lincoln's VP. The two never met until after they'd been elected.
