Giant Bluegill sign and statue.

Big Bluegill Fish Statue

Field review by the editors.

Orr, Minnesota

On the northwestern route up to Voyageurs National Park and the Canadian border, a town entrance sign and fish photo opportunity promises Orr, on Pelican Lake, is "Home of the Giant Bluegill."

The big fish is right along Highway 53, colorful and easy to spot, though not as large as other fish statuary in the region. It's a right profile view of a bluegill fish.

The fiberglass statue and wooden welcome sign probably dates from before the 1980s, and is credited to sculptor Gordon Shumaker (who created other Minnesota giants: White Bear's Chevy dealer Polar Bear, Smokey Bear in International Falls, and Alexandria's Viking, "Big Ole.").
