Butte, Alaska - Ferris Wheel / Sword in the pole This place has been submitted once before as the Sword in the Pole, which is also pretty neat, but the real local attraction is the old ferris wheel. The last time we were out there the owner offered us a ride and said it was powered by the people riding the attraction. I wasn't wearing the right clothes to climb up into it, but the owner assured us it worked great and is a lot of fun.
He also has several old vehicles and motorcycles, some of which are restored. There are several old ambulances that look like the Ghost Busters wagon, old Buicks, Desotos, Dodges, a couple motorcycle limos, and a old Dodge truck that's been turned into a 3-wheeled wonder.
The gift shop was closed a few summers ago, but he offered a look at what was left inside. Some neat stuff from "A Christmas Story," such as the leg lamp and a red ryder bb gun, along with some hand crafted stuff but other than that there wasn't much left.
The entire property outside is really worth a look if your into old cars and strange conversation pieces. The guy was very nice about letting us look around because we pulled in and asked. [K. McLay, 07/10/2007]
Address: Butte, AK
Directions: Head east on Arctic Avenue from the Glenn Hwy in Palmer. Arctic will turn into the Old Glenn Hwy at some point but from the start it's about 5.5 miles. The ferris wheel and everything else is next to the highway on the left side. E. North Bridge Road is directly across the highway as a good map marker.
Butte, Alaska - The Sword In the Pole Along the old highway is a great place with a sword stuck in a telephone pole. There's also some odd stuff around the buildings on the property. The old man that lived there was very kind.
