Directions:: Sharon Woods Park. I-275 exit 46. Drive south on US Hwy 42 For a half-mile. Turn left onto E. Kemper Rd. Drive a half-mile. Turn right onto Highbanks and into the Park. Drive past the gatehouse, turn left into the parking lot.

The park's statue and sign are a nod to Ice Age Mastodon bone discoveries made in the area.

The statues, previously behind a fence, are now very accessible for photo ops. There are wood chips around the "mom" and a stepping stone path leading up to the "baby." There is a park admission booth, but if you let them know you are just there for the mastodon they might let you in.

Woolly Mammoth [Mastadon]

The Sharon Woods entrance on Kemper Rd contained a surprise: a Woolly Mammoth lumbering through the forest. We caught it creeping around on a moonless sub-zero night.

It's supposed to be a Mastodon (There's a "Mastodon Crossing" sign to the left of it, but you missed it in the dark). Mastodon bones have been discovered in the Park.
