Norwich, Connecticut: Miantonomo Monument
Miantonomo was captured by the English in 1643 and killed with a tomahawk to the head. The monument, nestled between suburban homes, has marked his grave since 1841.

- From downtown Norwich drive north on Hwy 12 for two miles. When you start driving through a century, look to the right for the green highway Miantonomo Monument sign. Turn right onto Elijah St. The monument will be on the left, in a grove of trees; look again for the green Miantonomo Monument sign.

During a battle between Native Americans, the Narragansetts ran from the charging Mohegans. Some fled along their familiar route while others, unfamiliar with the territory, unknowingly reached the high, treacherous cliffs of Yantic Falls. Rather than surrender to the Mohegans, Miantonomo leapt across the gorge and managed to land on the other side. Others of his tribe attempted to leap the chasm but were unsuccessful and plunged to their death onto the rocks in the abyss below.

Some say that Miantonomo made the leap, others that it was Uncas, who captured Miantonomo. Regardless, Miantonomo was captured, then killed by the English with a tomahawk to the head on Sept. 28, 1643. The Miantonomo Monument (an engraved stone block) supposedly marks his grave, and was dedicated on July 4, 1841.
