Marker: Blackbeard's Severed Head
This neatly-manicured corner of a marina in Virginia's Hampton Roads Harbor is known as Blackbeard's Point. This is because the famous pirate's head hung for years atop a pole, on display, at this spot. After being decapitated in battle and upon arrival in Virginia, the Virginia governor had the head hung from a pole at the mouth of the Hampton River as a warning to others who might be tempted by piracy.
