If you subscribe to the idea that John Hanson [the first President of the Confederation Congress in 1781] counts as a U.S. President, then you also believe his wife, Jane, was "the original First Lady," as this memorial asserts.
The lives of Hanson and her husband are recounted on the Jane Hanson National Memorial, which professes that "no presidential couple suffered more tragic fates" than they did. Sculptor Antonio Tobias conceived of a dual-bust memorial to reunite Jane and John Hanson after their 231 years apart. Jane is buried in an unmarked mass grave behind the memorial, which is in Mount Olivet Cemetery. John's remains are seemingly lost to history. Tobias also created the statue of John Hanson that stands in Frederick's county courthouse plaza.

In the summer the little river area has beautiful lily pads blooming. The murals are up and down the bridge at a river walk area that is just nice to visit. There are some great antique stores, art gallery and a distillery/ I was surprised by what a nice area it was in! It is meant to be viewed from the bridge, but there are little treasures under the bridge too!
[Jenn, 08/18/2021]This seemed like a regular water fountain with a bonus fountain at ground level for your dog. While we waited for the dog to finish, we looked more closely at the bas relief art above it -- and noticed that it was of an old drinking fountain. So it's a drinking fountain memorial to a drinking fountain memorial, which memorialized Marie Diehl, founder of the SPCA in Frederick.
