VW Beetle Spider It was closed when I went, but there is a hill next to the fence where you can get a good picture. The Beetle is across the street from: 6555 N Indian Canyon Dr, Desert Hot Springs.
[Geoff, 07/27/2010]My family owns this lot and my grandfather built the VW Spider. He was a welder and mechanic, and at one point the landmark was a VW repair shop. Family has owned it for many years now, and my aunt, her husband and close friends currently reside in the warehouse which we have have always referred to as "hole in the wall." The property is essentially indicative of the lifestyle my grandfather lived -- eclectic, free and passion driven.
My family are friendly people who enjoy their privacy but if you happen to see them and get their attention they may show you around. My aunt knows the life my grandpa lived better than anyone and loves to spread his memory.
[Dash, 04/20/2010]I was sure this place would not be open, given the previous reports. But to my surprise and my 5-year old son's delight, the main gate was open and a collection of wonders revealed. Not only did we get a close up view of the spider, but there was a mini kid's dream kind of paradise about 100 ft to the left of said arachnid. There is a realty sign out front, so I'm not sure what's up with that, but we had a great adventure today.
[Mary Dolan, 02/14/2010]I've been there three times, and it's usually empty and locked. This time, there was a truck in the lot and the garage was open, but no one would come out. It's a neat site for a VW enthusiast, and for anyone who likes a nice nutty view. Want to see it at night, since it's got lighting running through it, but not holding out hope.
There's a Jack-in-the-Box next door that is the easiest place to park -- then you can just walk around to any angle.
