The Palm Springs Public Arts Commission originally banned this larger-than-life bronze statue of Gene Autry, because it was an exact copy of a statue outside of the Autry National Center of the American West in Los Angeles -- right down to Gene's singing cowboy guitar, fancy boots, and good-guy hat. Autry supporters insisted that it wasn't an exact copy, since the LA statue was accompanied by a statue of Gene Autry's horse. Since this was Palm Springs, the logic of this argument held sway, and Gene was unveiled in late 2009 in front of a shopping center bearing his name.[RoadsideAmerica.com Team, 12/03/2009]
