World's Large Olive (maybe)
While driving through the miles and miles of groves of fruit, nut, and olive trees that dominate this area of California, we had to slam on the brakes to take in this huge olive. It stands alone on the southeast corner of South Ave. and Hall Rd, a few miles southeast of Corning. You have to be lost or looking for it to know it's there. There's no sign making any claim for its size or explaining why it's there. It just stands in silence, waiting for the perfect martini to come along.
[Phrank Phester, 11/29/2013]The Giant Olive
This 15-foot-tall olive is built of adobe and skewered by a red toothpick of stainless steel. The sculpture is at the intersection of South Avenue and Hall Road, in the corner of a Sevillano olive orchard owned by the DeCamilla brothers. The brothers commissioned the sculpture in recognition of Corning being the "Olive City." Sacramento-based artist Chuck Owens created the sculpture.
