Repairs underway at the coal house - 2011.

House of Coal

It's still there and standing at 2nd Avenue and Court Street, but burnt. It was funny to drive from Louisville, KY to Williamson, WV to see a burnt pile of coal.

House Made of Coal

Williamson's Coal House was gutted by a fire in October 2010. The coal part -- the exterior walls and arches -- escaped with almost no damage. The building's entrance is currently boarded up with plywood, but Mingo County plans to start replacing its interior walls, floor, and ceiling in April.

Coal House

Having lived in Williamson all my life, I've been in the coal house before, which is also a hot spot for visitors of the Hatfield-McCoy Marathon every June. What's also interesting is the fountain in front of the coal house, just to the left, that is of Chief Logan, a major historical figure for Mingo and Logan counties. It's full of pennies now, and last Halloween someone put bubblebath in it as joke.
