- Dallas, Texas - Ken's Muffler Shops
Kenneth Johnson of Cleburne was a country boy who learned to weld for the railroad. He went to Atlanta to learn the muffler business, then came back to Dallas and became the founder and owner of Ken's Muffler Shops in Dallas, Beaumont, Port Arthur, and Houston. Ken eventually purchased five Muffler Men as signage for his various shops; the first was the one at I-35 and Illinois Avenue. This location was named Bud and Ken Muffler from 1965-1967; Bud was Ken's brother-in-law. When they ended their business partnership the name was changed to Bud and Ben Muffler. Ken then expanded, placing Alfred E. Neumann Muffler Men at three of his shops in Dallas and one in Beaumont.
Ken passed in 2021 at the age of 92. Kenneth Johnson was my dad.

Sitting in the left front window of Atomic Candy is a humongous, faded, chopped-off Texaco Big Friend head. It still has the classic green color scheme of the Texaco Big Friends. Inside the candy store, a small Bunyan Muffler Man head is perched atop a soda fridge. It's a sad sight to see the heads without the rest of their bodies.
[Blake Balusek, 08/04/2022]In years gone by these big old statues would be junked. Sometimes all that were saved were the heads.

Located on the north side of the football field at Stuart B. Lumpkins Stadium, the Muffler Man representing the mascot of Waxahachie High School, the Indians, is a classic lantern-jaw muffler man with an added Native American headdress, warpaint in the colors of the school, and an upraised "How" arm. The mascot is guaranteed to remain until 2023, but petitions in the school and community have been made to change or remove both the school mascot and the Muffler Man.

The Cowboy Muffler Man looks like the car dealership is not only taking care of him, but actively getting him into the car-selling game: with his branded belt buckle and signage hanging from his branding iron (but, ironically, painting over his shirt's trademark.)
[Rustin LaFurney, 12/31/2021]The dealership has a new owner, so the old logo on the Muffler Man's shirt was painted out.
