- Moen-avi, Arizona - Dinosaur Tracks
We visited Dinosaur Tracks on a whim on our trip from the Grand Canyon up to Monument Valley. As some others, wer were a bit apprehensive when we saw the hand painted sign and several young men standing around a shack, a few with beers in hand.
However, the young Navajo man who approached when we pulled up was very polite and friendly. He gave us a full tour of the tracks, which were pretty impressive, answered all questions politely and cheerfully, and never once even hinted at asking for money. He even told us a faster way to get back to the highway by going across what seemed to be a private road through the village. We tipped $20 for the four of us, but never felt pressured and no one was drunk.

- Nothing, Arizona - Nothing, Arizona
10+ years ago, while working for a Southern California engineering/surveying company, I found myself deep in the Arizona desert conducting a survey on a lonely bridge somewhere between Wikiup and Wickenburg. It was August and must have been 110 degrees if it was six. My partner and I had left Phoenix in a gas-guzzling beat-up work truck that we kept at a Sky Harbor storage lot after stopping at a Circle-K for a six-pack of beer and a quart of bottled water (we thought it would be plenty).
I was so thirsty after finishing our survey that I thought the huge NOTHING ARIZONA (pop. 4) sign was just another mirage, but nope, it was real. If it wasn't for the beautiful !FREE! well water that was offered by the residents of Nothing, I might have thought the entire experience was just a dream (I was a little dehydrated and a bit loopy after all). We happily bought some stuff at the store, and I would have paid more for the water, but it was free! Just remember if you are ever thirsty in the Arizona desert and you round a bend in the highway where there is a huge red sign identifying NOTHING, ARIZONA, it is not a mirage and you are saved! It does seem a bit like a dream after all these years, but I'll never forget that water, or the friendly residents of Nothing.

- Oatman, Arizona - Dollar Bill Bar
There is this cool bar in Oatman, AZ that has ice cold beer on tap and the walls and ceilings are plastered with $1 bills. Visitors come and add a dollar bill with their name and the date they visited to any available spot on the wall or ceiling in the restaurant or bar. Very cool! The bartenders and locals are very friendly. A good way to beat the 100 + degree heat.

Mad Max meets meet a solar desert bar in the middle of the desert. It is in an old mining camp, five miles into the desert on a dirt road. There is live music, beer, cocktails, and food. Hundreds of people show up from Quartzsite, Lake Havasu City, and Parker. Something new is built every year. There is a church facade on the property, great bathrooms, and a maze of areas to sit and enjoy the views and people. After you've been there you will go back every year with a newbie to share the experience.
